An Outdated Home Gets a Lift For Veteran Couple

July 12, 2024

Howard C's journey from New York to Texas began with his military career in the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1975 to 1979. During his service at Fort Hood, he met his wife, Julia, who was also enlisted, in Austin, and as Howard fondly recalls, “well, you know how that goes. I stayed!” The couple settled in Kyle, Texas, where they raised three children in a home they purchased in 1998. Initially, the house was in great condition, but over the years, the wear and tear of a bustling family life took its toll. Cracks in the kitchen walls due to loose beams and outdated windows were issues that exceeded their budget.

Fortunately, Howard learned about Meals on Wheels Central Texas and the Home Repair program through a neighbor at church. "At least two people at my church have gotten services through you all," he states. After completing the necessary paperwork, Howard was quickly approved for assistance. Before long, contractors and a dedicated crew worked hard, transforming his home. “Those contractors got in there and did their work. I just sat back and watched,” he laughs. Because of support from @MealsonWheelsAmerica and the generous funding from @HomeDepotFoundation, Howard and Julia received a new 50-foot ramp and the walls and ceilings were repaired.

Now, with their family spread out across the country, Howard and Julia relish visits from their eight grandchildren. "While we probably don’t need a house this size, it’s nice to have those extra bedrooms," Howard shares. Thanks to the support from Meals on Wheels Central Texas, the Cowans' home remains a cherished gathering place for their growing family.
