Enhancing Safety: The McCool’s Journey to a Safer Home

October 11, 2024

Nestled on a charming, tree-lined street in Austin’s Colony, the McCool family—Alvin, a Vietnam Veteran, and Charlisa—have created a beautiful home. When they first moved, the unannexed territory of Travis County offered an attractive option for those seeking affordable home ownership.

Like any well-loved home, time has taken its toll, leading to wear on carpets, appliances, and fencing. Alvin, a chef, has always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, but a life-altering car accident in Memphis in 2001 severely limited his mobility. While helping a stranded motorist, a negligent driver struck him, resulting in serious injuries. His recovery involved weeks in a nursing home and extensive rehabilitation, leaving him with long-term physical challenges and financial burdens from medical co-pays.

Despite these hardships, Alvin returned to work as soon as medically possible, eventually moving to Texas for a fresh start, where he met Charlisa. Together, they built their life in Austin’s Colony. Over time, they noticed Alvin’s increasing struggle with everyday tasks, especially in the bathroom, where their seated tub made bathing unsafe.

Facing obstacles in accessing resources, Charlisa noted, “Even food banks and other services don’t serve this area,” highlighting the lack of support in Austin’s Colony. Remembering the Home Repair program that had helped her mother, she reached out for assistance.

After completing three projects, Charlisa expressed, “We feel extremely blessed to stay in our home safely.” Home Repair installed a walk-in shower, upgraded the kitchen, repaired the ceiling, replaced exterior fencing, and removed carpeting from the stairs to minimize fall hazards. They are now awaiting a decision on a fourth project to further enhance safety by removing carpeting from common spaces.

Thanks to the Home Repair team, the McCools have improved their living conditions and regained a sense of security in their beloved home.
