Did you know you can form a meal delivery team with family, friends, or colleagues at Meals on Wheels Central Texas? You can share the joy of delivering hot, healthy meals and moments of connection to our homebound neighbors in need.
One of our volunteers, Martin R., has delivered on a few shared routes over the past several years. He first began volunteering at Meals on Wheels Central Texas with his law firm colleagues. After retiring, Martin kept the ritual alive by forming his own delivery team with friends.
“I reached out to a dozen friends about sharing a route,” he explains, “and 6 or 7 of them said yes.” Today, that group is Team He-Man at Meals on Wheels Central Texas. Every Thursday, Martin and one of his buddies from the team deliver meals to neighbors on the east side of Austin.
When asked why he's kept the tradition for so many years, Martin says, "Feeding people is important."
“Some of the people we deliver to are quite friendly. Mr. Hardeman and Ms. Roberts are very pleasant and enjoy the conversation,” Martin shares. “I also like having the chance to deliver meals while catching up with friends.”
On top of it being a “nice thing to do,” Martin shares that it has been a good bonding experience for the team. Every Thursday after completing their route, Team He-Man stops for lunch at the eastside classic, Joe’s Bakery.
For years, Martin and his wife, Marianne, have been generous supporters of Meals on Wheels Central Texas and other local organizations supporting hunger relief. We want to thank them both, as well as Team He-Man, for empowering our Meals on Wheels Central Texas neighbors.
Our volunteers are critical in helping us combat local hunger and social isolation for older adults in need especially now when the programs our neighbors depend on are affected. Your time makes a difference. Your help makes the lunch hour lifeline possible.
