The Benefits of Seeking Professional Mental Health Support

March 25, 2025

In our series on Enhancing Mental Health and Combatting Isolation, we will highlight the benefits of Seeking Professional Mental Health Support. Throughout life, we encounter stressful events and challenging situations. Professional mental health support offers a variety of benefits for people of all ages.

Older adults may have difficulties adapting to the change brought on by the natural process of aging. Stressors among this age group can include loneliness, grief, cognitive decline, and chronic health conditions.

Whether you are interested in seeking professional support for yourself or are helping an older adult loved one access resources, we hope that the information below can offer some guidance in your journey toward accessing the care you need to thrive.

Seeking support from a mental health professional can provide significant benefits including:

  • Offering a safe space to express feelings
  • Allowing individuals to develop coping strategies
  • Enabling individuals to gain insight into personal experiences
  • Helping older adults navigate the complexities of aging
  • Ensuring older adults feel heard and understood

Loneliness and social isolation are key risk factors for mental health concerns among older adults, especially for those who live alone. As per the National Council on Aging, up to 25 percent of adults above the age of 65 are living with a mental health condition such as anxiety or depression.

If you are an older adult and are struggling with a mental health concern, know that you are not alone. Reaching out for help is a courageous and vital step toward enhancing your well-being. There are compassionate professionals ready to support you every step of the way.
