Urgent Action Needed —Help Restore $250,000 of Cut Funding for Home-Delivered Meals

November 12, 2025
What’s at Risk: Hunger, Malnutrition, and Loneliness
As a loyal supporter of Meals on Wheels Central Texas, you know better than anyone how much of a difference a hot meal and a friendly knock can make. Every day, you and thousands of other dedicated Central Texans help us provide more than nutrition—your compassion helps us deliver hope, safety, and vital connection to some of Austin’s most vulnerable neighbors.
Right now, $250,000 in city funding for Home Delivered Meals is at risk. The revised City of Austin budget removes this vital support, which means 200 of our most vulnerable neighbors could lose the daily meals and wellness checks they depend on. This funding was part of the original budget passed in September but was cut after the failure of Proposition Q — redirected instead to items tied to that initiative.

Dear Councilmember [Last Name],
I volunteer with Meals on Wheels Central Texas, delivering meals and friendly visits to older and homebound neighbors here in Austin. For many of the people I serve, that knock on the door isn’t just about food. It’s their connection to the outside world, their safety check, and often the highlight of their day.
The proposed $250,000 reduction in city funding for Home Delivered Meals will mean 200 of our neighbors may go without these daily visits and nutritious meals. At a time when other services for seniors are also being reduced, this cut will have a real human impact.
Please, I urge you to restore this funding in the final city budget. These meals — and the caring volunteers who deliver them — make Austin a more compassionate, connected city.
Thank you for your leadership and for supporting programs that allow older adults to live safely and independently in their own homes.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
