How Meal Delivery Volunteers Combat Social Isolation in Central Texas
Studies show over 43 percent of adults aged 60 and up report feelings of loneliness. The cause of this loneliness may be social isolation.
At Meals on Wheels Central Texas, most of those we serve are 65 years old and up. Many are managing complex health conditions and are homebound. They do not regularly leave home. For some, visits from our volunteers are the sole social interaction they have in a day.
That’s why our Home-Delivered Meal program is a lifeline. On top of our meals being a vital source of nutrition support, our volunteers provide meaningful moments of connection that enhance safety and combat social isolation.

Social isolation amongst older adults has been linked to increased risk of health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and dementia. Through The Power of the Knock, volunteers help us address this issue to help our neighbors safely age in place.
