This program provides a vital lifeline to the outside world for homebound Central Texas seniors at a time when COVID-19 prevents them from having visitors.
To protect the health of those we serve, we have pivoted from daily meal deliveries to deliveries of two weeks’ worth of lunches every other Friday. This reduces our clients’ odds of being exposed to the virus, but it also means they miss those eagerly anticipated daily visits from volunteers. Seeing a smiling face at the door each day helps fight feelings of isolation or depression, “viruses” that also pose a serious threat to those we serve.
Care Calls fills that void with friendly phone calls from caring volunteers and staff. We’re looking for compassionate Central Texans who have some time each week to reach out to a lonely senior who needs a phone friend during the pandemic.
We currently have more than 50 clients who have requested calls and are waiting for a volunteer match. A small investment of your time will make a world of difference in the life of a Central Texas senior.
Care Call volunteer duties:
- Make calls once or twice a week to one client (or you can choose up to five clients to call on a regular basis).
- Be a good listener.
- Schedule calls with the clients at a time agreed upon by the client and you.
- Contact MOWCTX with any concerns or problems that may occur during conversations with the client(s).
- Check in by e-mail or phone with the Care Calls Program Coordinator on a monthly basis confirming you are still calling your client(s).
If you have any questions about volunteering for this program, please contact our Care Calls Program Coordinator, Stephanie Houghton-Bowman, at firstname.lastname@example.org
*NOTE: Before becoming a volunteer, we ask that you speak with a volunteer coordinator, fill out our volunteer inquiry form, provide a copy of your driver’s license and allow us to run a criminal background check.
