Get to Know Us Thursdays: GTG and HOPE
Join us for "Get to Know Us Thursdays", a weekly virtual chat with Meals on Wheels Central Texas program and department managers! Each week, we will be highlighting a different program or department. Meet our staff, learn about our current operations and those we serve, and have the chance to ask any questions you have. This week we will be chatting with Groceries to Go and HOPE Program Manager Nora Salinas.
About Groceries to Go
Groceries to Go is a grocery shopping service that matches volunteers with seniors who can cook for themselves, but who have no reliable or consistent help with grocery shopping. If the client is able to get around on their own, volunteers help prepare a shopping list, provide transportation to and from the grocery store and assist with shopping and putting groceries away. If the client is mobility impaired, volunteers collect the grocery list and payment and do the shopping for them. Clients provide payment for all purchases. Volunteers may also be asked to pick up prescriptions if the pharmacy is near the grocery store.
About HOPE
HOPE (Healthy Options Program for the Elderly) is a grocery delivery service providing additional food items to seniors and adults with disabilities who have been identified as being the most nutritionally at risk. HOPE is a collaboration between Meals on Wheels Central Texas and the Central Texas Food Bank. On the second Saturday of each month, volunteers deliver bags of non-perishable groceries to the homes of clients in need.

I Need a Sub for My Route
Substitute Drivers are responsible for delivering meals to homebound clients as a back-up driver when the regular volunteer meal delivery driver is unable to take the route. Much like a substitute teacher, the substitute driver does not have a permanent weekly route, but is called as needed.
