HOPE

HOPE (Healthy Options Program for the Elderly) serves to provide additional food items to Meals on Wheels Central Texas clients who have been identified as being the most nutritionally at risk. HOPE is a collaboration between MOWCTX and the Central Texas Food Bank

Thanks to our amazing community, we are currently full on all HOPE program volunteer opportunities and do not need new volunteers at this time. We will update this page when we can take new HOPE volunteers again.

VOlunteering to deliver hope bags

On the second Saturday of each month, volunteers pick up and deliver bags of shelf-stable food items to clients. Grocery bag pick up and delivery tend to take 2 hours or fewer. Volunteers must be able to:

  • Use their own vehicle to deliver pre-packaged sacks of groceries to a group of assigned clients on the second Saturdays of the month.
  • Must be able to follow driving directions via a provided map and be willing to deliver to various areas of town within Austin.

We do not currently have a need for volunteers to deliver bags through our HOPE program, but please continue to check back to see if we do.

If you have any questions about volunteering for this program, please contact our HOPE Program Manager, Nora Salinas, at hope@mealsonwheelscentraltexas.org.

*NOTE: Before becoming a volunteer, we ask that you speak with a volunteer coordinator, fill out our application, provide copies of both your driver’s license and car insurance, and allow us to run a criminal background check. You must also attend a short orientation/training session.

GROUP VOLUNTEERING

Volunteer teams come together each month to sort food donated by the Central Texas Food Bank and to put together 550-600 individual bags which later get delivered to our clients. This volunteer opportunity is held at our offices at 3227 East 5th Street. From sorting, to packing, to cleanup, this project tends to take groups three to four hours to complete, and groups of 10 to 12 people are recommended to ensure the project is completed in that timeframe. This is a physical volunteer opportunity requiring lifting when creating the assembly line, when situating the food, and when putting the finished bags on shelves. Groups or organizational teams who are interested in volunteering to pack HOPE bags can reach out to schedule a date and time by contacting our HOPE Program Manager, Nora Salinas, at hope@mealsonwheelscentraltexas.org.
